Poppies for Sue

Hi everyone.  Here's my Design Team card for the latest challenge at Addicted to Stamps & More - CAS#6.  I kept the card CAS by mostly focusing on the image and then adding a small banner sentiment.

This card is also for the SCS Featured Stamper Challenge (FS317 - SueN).  I had so much fun looking through Sue's wonderfuly gallery of cards.  Thanks Sue ... your beautiful card inspired me to pull out this lovely poppy stamp from SU - I had forgotten that I bought it and it hadn't been inked until just now!  Congrats on being chosen Featured Stamper - enjoy your week!

Stamps:  Pleasant Poppies, A Word for You (SU!)
Paper:  Watercolor; Old Olive Houndstooth DP (SU!)
Ink:  Tangerine Tango, Cajun Craze, Old Olive, Sahara Sand, Versamark (SU!)
Accessories & Tools:  Black embossing powder, heat gun, blender pen, Stamp-a-ma-jig, sticky strips, adhesives, and dimensionals

This stamp is actually a large background stamp.  I took advice from my friend, Bonnie (Stamping with Klass) and cut the stamp into two pieces so they could be used separately - lots more flexibility.  Thanks Bonnie.

I stamped the image with Versamark ink and embossed with black powder using my heat tool (something that SueN does a lot).  I rarely heat emboss because I find it makes such a mess and I end up with powder everywhere.  I realize now that I need to just come up with a better system, because the heat embossing is a wonderful technique that I should use more often.  I used the marker layering technique to color in the poppies ... using a blender pen to swipe some color from my ink pads, adding a light base coat, and then adding more depth of color with small dashes or dots from my Stampin' Write markers and blending to achieve the look above.  When I was finished "watercoloring", I added an outline using my Sahara Sand Stampin' Write marker and then blended the line a bit with the blender pen - this gave the poppies more dimension.  So happy with how this turned out.

Here's a close-up view of the poppies:

I hope I have inspired you to join in the fun for the latest challenge at ATS&M.  Click here to check out the challenge and see the other Design Team's creations - they are amazing!!

Loll, your poppies are gorgeous! I'm about to post a poppy card for Sue (suen) on SCS! But I was inspired by a different one of her cards! I love the colouring on your card and the delicate shading you did around the outside edges.

Gorgeous poppies Loll. They look so real and even dimensional with your sahara sand outlining. I love to heat EB too. If you fold a piece of scratch copy paper in half then use under your EB piece when you shake off excess EB powder your powder easily slides back into the powder container. I then immediately throw that scratch paper away and start fresh if I do more than one EB image. Also, I think an EB Buddy is a must have to use on your CS "before" you stamp your image. Prevents excess EB powder from sticking on your CS. Hope this helps. Happy EB, Nancy

I always hesitate to use embossing powder too! It is a wonderful technique though. And your poppies are gorgeously painted! Glad I could help. I'm so glad I separated my stamp.

Beautiful card, Loll. I think heat embossing is a really good idea. Great tip from Bonnie too for your stamp. Have you got an embossing buddy? xx

Beautiful poppies Loll. I tend to want to emboss every time I stamp! (Saw it done at my intro to stamping and so I think it's part of the process). I use the tips that others have already mentioned, emboss buddy to reduce stray spots that won't colour, and folding some A4 copy paper to catch the powder when you pour it to emboss, and then it pours easily back into the container.(Although I keep my paper in a plastic sleeve for use next time with that powder!) Beautiful Loll! Love red and love your poppies! oh what fun to do surgery on a stamp and use it differently than it was intended... makes a stamper smile! Keep those scissors handy or the craft knife, at all times! lol Your coloring technique sounds really interesting! We colored with twinkling h20's at club today and the gal teaching had our images embossed for us to paint. I need to do that more too... really looks nice! I'll have to post the card we made! : ) TFS!
