Happy Birthday Jer

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a card I made for my son's birthday.  He is an artist and I always show him all the cards I make and he gives me valuable feedback.   I showed him this card I made a last week, using this watercolored background.  He loved it ... and I hadn't even thought that I should have kept it to myself to give to him for his birthday which is in a couple of weeks - duh!! :)

So today I made a second card very similar, but added some special effects.  This time, I made it look like a piece of art hanging on a wall ... at least that's what I was going for :)  I made a trip to an art store yesterday and picked up some new-to-me supplies, one that I used on this card.  It is a gel medium that is filled with tiny glass beads.  I used my palette knife to scrap it over top of the watercolored background (a leftover piece from my card from last week).  I LOVE how it looks.  It adds texture, sparkle and shine to the image.  It dries clear, so the colors show through - I just love it and look forward to experimenting more with this product.

I'm including a couple of close-ups so hopefully you can see the texture and shine from this glass bead coating.

Today I'm also sharing two more cards from my Dirty Dozen Design Team for last October - theme "It's about Time".

The sentiment is computer generated, so I printed that onto my card front first.  Then I splattered the background with a toothbrush loaded with diluted re-inker.  I didn't have a clock image or die, so I printed off this clock face from the internet, adding a bit of brown sponging around the edges to give it even more of an aged look, and then mounted it on a circle of heated copper.  I mounted the "clock" onto a banner cut from burlap ribbon.


The second card is celebrating "vacation time" ... now I would like to be in a place like this! :)  I brayered the sky and stamped a silhouette of palm trees.  I then mounted it behind a square cut-out so that it's like you are looking through a window at a beautiful sunset.

You Make Me Smile

Hi everyone.  The card today is a little different style for me ... I seem to be doing that a lot lately :)  This is a CASE (copy and share everything) of Virginia Lu's beautiful card (below), that is the current challenge at Time Out!  As you can see, I kept very close to Virginia's layout and colors, but changed up the main focal point to a collection of hearts.  I used a piece of burlap to add texture under the hearts, omitting the gathered string on Virginia's card.  With all the lovely layers and embellishments, this is not a CAS card, but more of a layered card.  I am really happy with how it turned out.  And I got to use a bit of designer paper, so I'm happy about that too. :)

Tattered Leaf

Hi everyone.  Today is the latest challenge from Addicted to CAS.  The code word this time is chosen by our wonderful and talented leader, Kylie of Kylie is Addicted to CAS (and now butterflies).

Grunge is not a style that I use, but I did have a lot of fun making this card.  I randomly sponged three colors over the background stencil.  I poured water into the palm of my hand, and then dipped my fingers from my other hand into the water and flicked it over my front panel.  Because the sponging is such light colors, the splattering doesn't really show in the photo, but it's there.  Once dry, I used my scissors to rough up the edges for a distressed look.

I die-cut the tattered leaf from white cardstock and roughed up the edges same as the front panel.  I dropped some re-inker from each of the three colors onto my craft sheet, misted with water and then dropped the leaf into the diluted inks.  Once dry, I added more sponging around the edges to give the leaf more color.  A simple sentiment finishes the card.

Polka-Dot Daisies

Hi everyone.  Quick and easy CAS card today ... this only took me about ten minutes.  That's a record for me as I'm usually so slow.  I love how happy this turned out :)

This is another layered stencil card.  Here's how I made the card ... placed my daisy stencil on my card front, sponged leaves and stems with green and the flower heads with coral.  Laid my polka-dot lace stencil over top of the flower stencil and sponged with white pigment ink.  The white polka-dots make this fun and whimsical set of flowers even more fun.  :)   The sweet sentiment finishes the card.

Can you believe that I just bought my very first pigment ink??  Crazy, huh??  I've never learned much about inks, usually buying the water-based dye inks from Stampin' Up!.  But I'm going to branch out and I'm looking into the Distress inks from Tim Holtz, Pigment inks from Hero Arts and also will look for some alcohol-based inks too.

Hello Butterfly

Hi everyone.  My card today is a little different for me.  I saw a tutorial on SCS (Splitcoast Stampers) for "faux glass" and wanted to give it a try.  Of course, I didn't have the alcohol re-inkers, blending solution and fixative that's needed for the technique (all I did have was the plastic!).  :)   I didn't let that stop me.  I tried various things, none that gave me consistent results.  I did manage to cover enough plastic to cut out the two layers for the butterfly above, by scribbling Copic markers onto my craft sheet, and picking up the color with a piece of felt that was slightly wet with rubbing alcohol.  The butterfly is really pretty in real life ... the full-size shot of the card doesn't do it justice, so I have a close-up below.  Not sure if all the mess was worth it, but at least I gave it my best shot.  Of course, if I had the right supplies, it would have gone much smoother ... I see more things being added to my wish list :)

I'll let you know once I get the proper supplies if this technique really works for me.  The results above make me want to try again.

Watercolours Again

Hi everyone.  Playing around with the same technique as a couple of days ago (Happy Watercolored Birthday).  This time I used the orange and yellow from the Muse Card by Marion Vagg, but changed the blue to Rich Razzleberry (love this bright purple!).

I also kept the white embossed wood grain background from the Muse card, but it looks so different being an A2 card (4 1/4" x 5 1/2") from the square card.  I used a white silhouette of die-cut daisies and white embossed sentiment.

Here are two more of my Dirty Dozen Design Team cards from last October (click here for an explanation as to why I'm sharing them now).  Along with the theme challenge of "It's about Time", there are also challenges within the central theme ... one of them being "More is More.  This is where you make a card, and then make a stepped-up version.

Happy Watercolored Birthday

Hi everyone.  Having some fun playing with watercolor paper.  Today I poured some drops and squiggles of re-inker in both Turquoise and Tangerine onto my craft sheet.  Misted some water and then placed my watercolor on top, letting it soak up all the beautiful color.  It's just a little different way of adding the ink to my paper.  I absolutely LOVE how this turned out.  The color combo is so pretty and I love the deep, saturated colors.  I thought it would be perfect with a black base, so switched up my usual white-on-white card base and front panel.  Perfect for a masculine birthday.

The black base is hard to photograph as it doesn't show the true, deep black it is in real life.  The dark black intensifies the turquoise and tangerine even more - I wish it photographed better for you to see.

I used the little leaves die-cut from Sizzix, just securing it at the base of the stem under the sentiment and also two leaves, and letting the rest of the leaves remain loose so the card has a bit of movement.  Originally I stamped the sentiment in black directly onto the the watercolored panel.  I lined up my Stamp-a-ma-jig so that I could stamp it twice as stamping on watercolor paper can be a bit tricky because of the texture.  For some reason I ended up with a shadow stamping on the second try and it was hard to read.  Not wanting to forgo using this pretty watercolor paper, I opted to stamp and emboss the sentiment onto a thin strip of black card stock to place over the mistake... I like it even better than my original idea. :)

I'm entering this into the CAS on Sunday challenge (#31 - birthday with die-cut) and this will also be my second entry for Addicted to Stamps & More #91 - Anything Goes.  I'm so going to add this to the current challenge at Less is More #168 - Makes me smile ... when I saw this challenge, I immediately thought I'd be making a cute and whimsical card to enter (and I may still do that), but this card makes me smile.  I love the artsy look of the ink splat background and the bright colors with the black to ground everything.

I have signed up for the next On-Line Card Class - Watercoloring, which begins on May 5th.  So looking forward to learning more tips and tricks for using this wonderful medium.

Happy Easter

I wanted to share the treat bags I made up for Sunday (and a turtle toy for Cooper).  We haven't had an Easter egg hunt since the kids were little ... look forward to the day when we will have them with Cooper --- won't be long, the time is flying by and he's already four months old!

The tags are made from one digital file that I purchased ... there are actually ten designs along with two different sentiments - great deal! :)

I colored with Copics and then added a little shading and cheeks to the chicks using chalk.  Below is a close up of the tags so you can see more detail.  They are all so cute, but I have two favorites, the one for Cooper where the chick is coming out of the speckled egg, and the one for my mom - she's all dressed up in her fanciest Easter bonnet.  :)

Wish I had taken the time to find a similar font to the Happy Easter sentiment and added the names with the computer ... my printing is not good and my pen looks like it was running out of ink. :(  Oh well, I don't think anyone will mind - they will be focused on the candy :)  You can see that I didn't want to miss out on the candy and even made one for myself :)

Spring Tulips

Hi everyone.  I had fun using a couple of stencils to make today's card.  I sponged the lattice background and then splattered with pink.  I then used the tulip stencil to add embossing paste.  Once dry, I placed the stencil back over the paste and sponged on the pink and green inks.  I used two shades of pink to give a graduation of color.  The sentiment was stamped in gray ink to keep with the softer tones of this card.  The sentiment looks crooked, but it is straight in real life --- isn't it fun when the camera plays tricks on us?? :)

The soft green ink is a gift from my friend Nancy - thanks Nancy!!  She sent me this ink and also a soft coral - can't wait to give that color a try! :)

Sharing Design Team cards

Hi everyone.  I mentioned on my blog last October that I had been asked to join the Dirty Dozen Design Team at Splitcoast Stampers.  I was so honored and excited to be a part of the team that designs for the Fan Club, which is a paid membership at SCS (Splitcoast Stampers).  Part of the agreement for becoming a DT member is to provide a minimum of six cards per month for six months, with my dates running from Oct. 2013 - Mar. 2014.  One of the other parts of the agreement is that our designs not be posted anywhere else on-line for six months, so I was not able to post them on my blog.   The restriction time has now passed and over the next several months I will be sharing my Dirty Dozen Design Team cards.  Some of you may have already seen them if you are a Fan Club member, but I believe these will be new to most of you.  Hope you enjoy them! :)

The theme for October was "It's about Time" ... so anything to do with time (images, sentiments, etc.).  My first month, I went a bit crazy and made twelve cards :)  Here are two of them ...

This is for "Autumn time" and my sentiment also includes a time reference.  I used hand-made paper for the maple leaf ... it's very thin, so I glued it to a piece of white card stock before die-cutting.  I then inked the edge of the leaf with gold.  I love this paper ... it's so beautiful, but also works for this rustic image, especially paired with the text background and black hemp twine.


Another "Autumn time" card ...

For the leaves, I misted watercolor paper with water and then added drops of diluted re-inkers (yellow, orange, rust) with my Aqua Painter on top and let the colors bleed into the paper.  Once the paper was dry, I stamped my leaves in dark brown and then blended the outline into the leaves using a blender pen.  I fussy cut the leaves and then sponged more dark brown around the edges.

Pebbles and Leaf

Hi everyone.  Today I made a sympathy card to send to my ex-sister-in-law and family (my nieces and nephews).  She just lost her dad ... a wonderful man who I met over 35 years ago.  It's a difficult time.

I used today's Muse (#63) card (by Therese Calvrid) as my jumping off point.  I changed the layout slightly by removing the frame and leaving some space at the bottom of my main panel (it is flush with the top of the card).  This seemed to work well with the design, which is a sponged background using a pebbles stencil that I cut with my Cameo.  I die cut the leaf sprig and stamped a design to give it some interest.  Although it may be hard to tell in the photo above, the sentiment banner is curved for added dimension.

A little bit about my card ...

When I saw the challenge - Far Away ... it made me think of missing a loved one that is far way, so I made a "missing you" card. :)

I used one of the wonderful digital images from our sponsor, called Pretty Petals.  Just love this sunflower!!  I colored it in Copics and then used a Wink of Stella pen to add some glimmer ... just outlining the petals and leaves of the flower, and adding it to the cross-hatching of the flower center.  This is my first time using this pen and I LOVE IT!  It flows so smoothly and it's easy to "paint" on some shimmer.  I'm including a close-up below so you can see how just adding an outline adds lots of sparkle.

Falling Snow

Hi everyone.  A little more experimenting with my stencils ... this time I sprayed the soft blue background over my snowflake stencil.  I mixed my own spray in a mister, filling it mostly with rubbing alcohol, and then adding a few drops of Frost White All Purpose Ink (it has shimmer ... unfortunately you can't see it in the photo), and about four drops of Bermuda Bay re-inker.  I just purchased some misting bottles from Simon Says (they come in a three pack from Ranger), and I think I'm going to get more and make up lots of different colors of sprays to have on hand.  This made for a quick, easy and beautiful background ... and as I mentioned, it's very shimmery and pretty too! :)

I added a simple banner with greeting and a snowflake die-cut from silver glimmer paper.  Lovely CAS Christmas card.

I'm going to make this my second entry for the current challenge at CAS-ology #90 - cue card:  Wet ... as well as the current challenge at Paper Smooches - Anything Goes.  And also entering it into the Sparkle Christmas Challenge #19 - no patterned paper and my third entry into Virginia's View Challenge #2 - Stencils.

It's crazy how so many challenges have lined up for my cards lately :)

Remembering Marie ...

I've mentioned briefly a few times that my DMIL has been ill.  She was diagnosed with advanced cancer in January 2013 and told she only had about three months to live.  She had other plans ... one of which was to meet her first great-grandchild, Cooper.  A year later, she got her wish.  Below is a picture of her holding Cooper, which was taken in January of this year.

A few months ago, the cancer started to take over and by the beginning of March she was in the hospital.  Two weeks later, she was moved to hospice care and on April 9th, Marie passed away.  It's been a very difficult time for the family, but we are thankful that she was in no pain until the last few days.  It is a blessing that she didn't suffer long.  We miss you Marie ... you are forever in our thoughts.

Bokeh Birthday

Hi everyone.  A bit of a different card for me.  I have been seeing lots of cards around using the Bokeh Technique, so wanted to try making another one of these fun cards.  My first Bokeh card is here and there's a little more information about the technique.  And, it looks as though I used some of the same colors (I do love orange and pink together!). :)

But, the colors for this card actually came from the Photo Inspiration of the latest challenge at ATS&M - #90 ...

And this card is also for the lastest challenges at CAS-ology (#90 - cue card:  Wet) ... and Paper Smooches - Anything Goes.

I taped my watercolor paper card front to a piece of cardboard to hold it flat, then I misted it with water.  I also misted my sponged daubers, but don't know if that made any difference.  I inked up a large and small dauber in each of the four colors and randomly "stamped" them onto my wet card front.  I used my heat gun to dry the watercolor paper and then stamped my sentiment.  Bright, cheerful and very easy to make card! :)
