Gilded Reindeer

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing my first time using gilding flakes.  Boy, they are MESSY! :)  But a fun messy. :)  I actually did this reindeer twice.  The first time it ripped and I lost one of the antlers.  Note to self ... maybe don't use a die with thin pieces for my first attempt with a new product. :)  I tried to be very careful the second go around, and I don't think I burnished the flakes as much as I would like, but at that point, I just didn't want to have to make a third. :)  In the end, I'm happy with it and I learned some things along the way.

I die-cut the reindeer using sookwang tape.  The gilding flakes stick to it really well and I didn't have a glue-y mess on my hands - bonus!  I brushed away a lot of the excess, and then used some Cut-n-dry foam, rubbing in a circular fashion, to clean off the rest.  The foam works great and it's not expensive, so definitely worth buying for this technique.

I wanted to use black from my card base, so used a piece of corrugated black card stock from my friend Christine.  Thanks Christine!  It's hard to see in the photo above, but it has a subtle stripe to it.  The sentiment and the dotty background are heat embossed in gold.  I love how this card turned out and think I'll be making a lot of gilded cards for next Christmas. :)

  6. Fabulous first attempt with gilding flakes! I agree, they work really well with sookwang tape - I've had great results that way, but poor results with the glue. I love the reindeer against the black cardbase, and the splatter stamp works perfectly for a background.

  11. Beautiful Loll. Just a tip........if you want to use gilding flakes on a die cut with delicate pieces then you can always gild your piece of card BEFORE you die cut your reindeer. This allows you to burnish it to your heart's content with no worries about damaging the diecut.

    Hugs.

  13. Looks gorgeous Loll.
Have you tried using an open weave plastic pan scrubber to burnish? The red backed double sided tape is good for sticking the flakes too! :)

  14. Just remembered you could used that double sided film to die cut with too. I have some v old double sided peel offs that look pretty when used with the flakes. My advise is to put the flakes in a large tub as you can never get them all back in the one they came with!

    1. Enlarging the photo shows up the subtle stripes in the black. Oh my, this elegant card must be the equivalent of the "Little Black Dress". The gold against that black...just so wonderfully done. Great work with the 1st gilding flake effort, and I really liked the gold spatters too. This looks like something to try in the new year, because it created such a glamorous look to this graceful deer. TFS & Hugs
