Brushos and Bleach
Hi everyone. Had another day of experimenting in my studio. So fun! :) Today I was trying out the bleaching technique on a brushos background that is a small part of this wonderful video from Dina of Splitcoaststampers. Even though this video is almost a year old, I only saw it for the first time last night and was mesmerized by all the way Dina shows how to use Brushos (or Color Bursts, or Bister Powders). Worth watching!
Before I started making my card, I put on some grubby clothes that I didn't care about. I have worked with bleach before. Even though I'm really careful, I still end up with it everywhere. Or so it seems. :) Just a warning for anyone else that is messy like me. :)
I have some empty water brushes, so filled one with bleach and used on one of my Brushos backgrounds from my stash. Didn't work the best. Took a long time to get the bleach to soak in. Then I remembered Dina mentioning about using it on "fresh" brushos to get more contrast and so created a smooshed Brushos background, dried it with my heat tool (not completely dry), stamped the flower sprig in Archival ink, and went over it lightly with a bleach filled waterbrush. LOVE how it turned out.
Not sure why it worked better on a new background and not ones in my stash, but maybe the colour sets more over time?? Not sure. This would be the same for the ghosting technique she shows in the video as well. Where you place a stencil over top of the brushos background, spritz with water and then remove the excess water with a paper towel. Doesn't show on backgrounds that have been made a while. :)
It's great to learn things. I'll be trying out more of Dina's techniques ... so many fantastic ideas.
Thanks for visiting!

Fabulous Loll - what a beautiful result! I'll watch the video and get the brushos and bleach out once I clear the decks and put a pair of overalls on :)

OMG Loll....I Love your Gorgeous smooshed Brushos background made even more beautiful with your stamped and bleached PB flowers! Stunning!! I can't wait to try my friend. Hugs, Nancy
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous, Loll! Love the colors in the background and how the flowers are a light blue!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done! I have not worked with bleach but it sounds fascinating! Thanks for the link and for describing this technique! Love how it looks, the slight fading color on the image!
ReplyDeleteThis is really pretty, Loll! I love the colors and the outline sprig and simple sentiment are all that are needed to let your artistic background shine.
ReplyDeleteLoll you create the most amazing backgrounds and one is no exception....gorgeous card

It sounds like a wonderful technique - your card is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis looks gorgeous ..... I love how the bleached out flowers look against that Brusho background. Must give this a try although I'm not that careful with bleach .... I get it everywhere too!! Have a lovely weekend xx
ReplyDeleteWow beautiful card Loll, thanks for sharing about new work vs old saved pages. Was wondering why use bleach rather than water as I have sen around lately. Is this because its quicker and easier?? Love the lightness of your brusho colours too, thats something I am really working on. Not being so heavy handed.
ReplyDeleteI love the bleaching of the leaves here Loll and I have recently tried the bleaching with water but I am not brave enough to try with bleach as am always so afraid I spill it on the carpet or have some on my fingers and transfer it to something that definitely doesn't suit the bleached look..lol. The colours in the background are so bright and pretty too. x
ReplyDeleteYou are going from big success to even bigger success! I LOVE this look. Only time I ever tried bleach was in a class years ago. This makes me want to go try it again! Thanks for the freshness tip too, cause I would have done the same as you with a previously made background. TFS the vid link and of course I'll watch! (no, I don't spend a lot of time looking at videos, LOL!) I am loving all this fresh spring green you've been using lately. This line art image was just perfect to keep to the lightness on this pretty card! TFS & hugs. (wish I lived closer so we could play!)
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike Loll! I've been playing with 'bleach painting' the past couple of days too! I haven't tried it with Brushos though, I don't get the same beautiful results with my Brushos that you do with yours! I've tried it with DI and various other brands of ink though, and it sure is fun (if I were a child, I would think it was magic) . . . who am I kidding . . . I still think it's magic! ;) Have a wonderful weekend my friend! Hazel xx

ReplyDeleteBeautiful background Loll! Had a look at the video too, Dina shows some fantastic techniques for using these powders! TFS, Cathy x
ReplyDeleteFunny enough I found this out recently too about brusho's..sometimes it's really useful for it not to migrate, lift etc but sometimes you want it to lift off...great technique and fabulous advice. Thank you so much for the inspiration x
ReplyDeleteWow, Wow, Wow! This is a stunning card Loll!! I really love that background you made, the colors are just beautiful. I am messy with bleach too, no matter how careful I am I always get it on me. Funny how it works better on a freshly made background, your turned out amazing! Hugs, Brenda
