Just Saying Hello

Hi everyone.  Playing along with this week's Less Is More Challenge #282 - Use a Stencil.  Had to play along as I do LOVE to stencil. :)

Lightly sponged bright yellow through a lattice stencil ... to me, it looks as though the sun is shining through. :)

Just got this pretty die from Penny Black.  Used watercolour paper to die-cut the flower sprig and distress inks to watercolour.  Pressed ink onto my craft mat, picking up colour with a wet brush to add to the watercolour paper.  So easy to do.

After the sprig was dry, I shaped the flower heads and leaves a little with my stylus and mat; then glued it down over top of the stenciled background.  A simple white heat embossed sentiment on black finishes the card.

There's still a few days left to play along before the stenciling challenge closes ...  come join in the fun.  There are so many inspiring cards from the Design Team and entrants.

Since I used a snippet of watercolour paper, I'm heading over to the Snippets Playground for some fun. :)

Inka Gold Christmas

Hi everyone.  I'm playing along with Merry Monday Challenge #211 (Blue, Gold, White / Silver).  This is the last Merry Monday until the beginning of September as the Design Team is taking a much needed break for the summer.

I had a difficult time photographing this card.  It looks blurry, and the inka gold shimmer does not show one bit.  In real life the blue, platinum (pearl) and gold inka smooshed in the background are shimmery and look like marble.  The die-cut gold snowflake is recessed behind the popped up card front with the snowflake aperture. The sentiment is heat embossing in gold to match.

Easy card to make as I already that the inka gold background in my stash, ready to be made into a card.  Why don't you come and play along??!!  The challenge is open until noon (PDT) on Sunday, so there's still lots of time to join in the fun!

Happy Birthday Mary!

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a birthday card I made for my good friend MaryH (Carolina Cards by MaryH).  Thankfully it arrived in the mail on time. :)  Happy Birthday Mary.  I hope you are having a wonderful day!

I have done a card similar to this before, using the same tulip image done with watercolour spritz technique.  That's where you ink up the image using markers, spritz with water and stamp onto watercolour paper.  Some stamps seem to be perfect with certain techniques ... and this is one of them. This time I included a splash watercoloured background that has lots of colour (click here to see my video tutorial).  I think it compliments the image nicely.

I didn't want to cover any of it up, so used vellum for my sentiment banner.  I added a few sequins for a bit of sparkle.

Happy Thoughts

Hi everyone.  A second card using the beautiful die from Penny Black.  This one is more my usual CAS style.  I used the same colours of Brushos as yesterday's card, but included lots of my beloved white space. :)  And I added a few dew drops made by my good friend, Hazel (My Card Attic).  Thanks Hazel!

My birthday is today. :)  And I want to thank all my wonderful friends for their well wishes and beautiful cards.  I appreciate all the love that was sent my way --- THANK YOU!

Yesterday the family gathered to celebrate a day early.  We had a delicious lunch brought in from one of our favourite restaurants.  I can't express how wonderful it was to have the whole family together.  It was really the best birthday EVER!

Playing in my Studio

Hi everyone.  I was experimenting a little the other day and came up with this card. It's not my usual CAS style, but I'm really happy how it turned out.

For the background, I started with this ...

  

OK, so why the inky paper towel??  That's because I have a friend who is so clever and creative and she has a great way to use leftover ink.  I'm talking about Maria Fischer (reislingmama).  After wiping up leftover ink, she dries the paper towels and uses them on her cards.  Check out her post HERE.

Well, I remembered that post ... it stuck in my head.  So after playing with Brushos about a week ago, I was wiping up the leftover ink and decided to keep the inky-licious paper towels. :)  I hung them up to dry to use later.

When I started my card above, I used mixed media paper, laid the inky paper towel over top, spritzed with lots of water and pressed down with my hands.  That's how I made my background.  Love the subtle colours, and the texture from the imprint of the paper towel design.  Cool, right??!!  Thanks again Maria, you inspire me ALL the time! :)

Next up, my new-to-me leaf die.  Isn't it pretty??  It's by Penny Black.  I love their stamps and dies, but this one is a bit tricky to use.  Do you see the thin stem on the sprig??  It's not very strong, especially if you like to use techniques with water for colouring, which I often do.  I had to be so careful moving my leaf sprig when it was wet.  That thin stem tends to rip.  Just a warning. :)  Once dry, I glued a second die-cut sprig to the back to make it sturdier.

I also die-cut a piece of acetate with the leaf die to make my own stencil.  I sponged two sprigs in the background (one light green, and one medium).

The die-cut sprig is watercolour paper, coloured with more Brushos and then popped up on top of my card base.  The black sentiment banner really makes the other colours pop.

Happy Birthday Barb!

Hi everyone.  Sharing a card I made to celebrate my friend Barb's (Barb's Studio Creations) birthday, which is today.  I sent this off to her a couple of weeks ago, and thankfully it arrived before the big day. :) Hope you are having a wonderful birthday Barb!!

I used my NBUS Wild Hibiscus stamp set from Altenew.  Just had to buy this set after seeing these beautiful cards made by my friend Hazel.

I started by heat embossing the flowers and leaves in liquid platinum embossing powder.  Then I sloshed on some colour using my zigs and a damp paintbrush.  I fussy-cut them and then popped them up over top of a dry embossed curved piece at the bottom.  Love the texture and design from this embossing folder.

Peace, Love & Joy

Hi everyone.  I'm playing along again this week at Merry Monday - Challenge #210 - Use Peace, Joy and/or Love on your card.  Isn't this a great challenge ... I fell in love with the inspiration photo (as you can tell from my card). :)  It's basically a copy of the photo.  Great challenge Bonnie!!

The girls at Merry Monday are taking a break for the summer months, so I wanted to join in as much as possible before they are on hiatus.  Always good to build my Christmas card stash. :)

The square is cut from balsa wood and I "stained" it with diluted distress inks (Antique Linen and Brushed Corduroy).  Then I heat embossed the small sentiment and die-cut the large joy twice, layering it to create a thicker die-cut.  I die-cut my pine sprigs, added a little bit of snow writer, and then glued them along the bottom, layering several on top of each other to create depth.

There's still a lots of time to play along, the challenge closes on Sunday at noon (PDT).  Come join in the fun!

Stenciled Birthday

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a stenciled card that I made for a friend's birthday a while ago.

I started with a lightly smooshed background of Inka Gold (turquoise and green). Then embossing paste was added partially over a mesh stencil.

Turquoise Inka Gold was sponged onto a piece of white card stock.  When dry, it was buffed to a beautiful shine and then die-cut into a leaf sprig.  The second leaf sprig is cut from vellum and is tucked behind the turquoise leaves, just to add a little bit of a shadow.  A simple birthday sentiment was stamped in Delicata Silver ink onto a banner.  Delicata inks are beautiful and metallic without having to heat emboss.

I do love to play with stencils!  And this was a lot of fun to make.

Let's be Merry

Hi everyone.  I really wanted to play along with this week's Merry Monday #209 - photo inspiration challenge.  I'm just squeaking in under the wire.  The challenge closes in a couple of hours.

I used a NBUS die from Memory Box called Blissful Bundle.  I die-cut it from green card stock and also from red.  I cut out the small little flowers from the red, glued them on top of the green and coated them with red glitter glue for some sparkle.  I also coated the two small poinsettia blooms as well with the same red glitter glue and then shaped and glued them together to form my flower.

The flower box was cut with a snippet of gold paper that I had heat embossed with sparkle gold embossing powder.  I wrapped a brayer with rubber bands, ran it over my versamark pad and then onto my gold foil card stock.  Then heat embossed with the sparkle powder.  Made this ages ago for THIS CARD, and used the leftovers today for the flower box.  Because I used a snippet (and snippets for the small flowers), I'm heading over to Snippets Playground to join in the fun. :)

I stamped my sentiment in Delicata Gold ink ... love this stuff.  Don't have to heat emboss ... it's shiny and sparkle all on it's own.

CAS Mix Up June Challenge - Die-cuts

With Love

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a card made with a beautiful die-cut sent to me by my good friend Barb.  Isn't the die-cut gorgeous??!!

I coloured it with my zigs, and then went about figuring out what to put in-behind. Nothing seemed to look right.  A few days went by ... then a week.  At the same time, I was playing with Stencil monoprinting and made this pretty background. Couldn't figure out what to do with it, so it was sitting on my work table as well ... for several days.  Then today I glanced and saw both of them sitting there ... I had a light bulb moment. :)  They work so perfectly together.  I was so excited I had to show hubby right away.  He loved it and said he thought it was like looking through trees at a city landscape in the distance.  It kinda does! :)

I have to say that I was impressed with his interpretation. :)  He is a mechanical kind of guy, not artistic at all.  But he has been exposed to so much art because of Jeremy being an artist and art teacher and me with my cards, that he has developed a love of all things artsy. :)

Fun with Markers

Hi everyone.  A while back, my friend Brenda (Friends Craftin' with Friends) did a tutorial on her blog for a beautiful card she made.  Click HERE to see Brenda's card and written tutorial.  I just had to try out her technique.

I'm really happy with how this turned out.  I used my Misti to stamp my flower, heat embossed, and then die-cut out a rectangle from the center.  I coloured the flower on the cut-out panel and then decided I needed to add a butterfly for balance.

After all my colouring was done, I  tried to stamp my sentiment.  I decided I was going to stamp it at the bottom on the background piece just below the cut out, using a fairly large sentiment.  I lined it up on my misti, stamped in versamark, and poured the embossing powder over top.  It was crooked.  I removed the powder right away and hoped that the sentiment wouldn't show ... but it did.  Darn!

I didn't want to have to start all over since my cut out panel was all coloured.  So I played around until I had it basically in the same place, stamped a new background and heat embossed.  I actually like it better because I didn't have to cut out the panel so you don't see the cut lines.  I just popped up the original cut-out panel over the new background.  Next time I do this technique, I will stamp two backgrounds so I have options. :)  I stamped a smaller sentiment in the cut-out panel to finish the card.

Splatter Tree

Hi everyone.  Today I'm playing along with the Less Is More Challenge #280 - One Layer card with Splatters.  I haven't had time to play along at LIM for a while, but when I saw the Splatter challenge, I had an idea that I had to try.  I'm happy with how it turned out.

There is very little to this card design besides the splatters.  I started by second generation stamping the tree with bare branches.  I then created a very loose "mask" by ripping a whole from the center of a piece of paper towel.  I used three colours of diluted reinkers to splatter over top of the tree outline (daffodil delight, real red, tempting turquoise).  I kept splattering one colour on top of the next until I was happy with the coverage.  Some of the wet inks combined to create more colours and shades for the tree.

I removed the mask and then splattered very lightly in the same general area to take away from the look of a masked edge.  Leftover diluted yellow and blue ink were combined to create green for the grassy area at the bottom of the tree.

I used diluted dark brown re-inker and a paint brush to darken some of the branches.  My idea was to make some see closer and the faded ones farther away. Not sure I accomplished what I wanted, but still happy with the outcome. :)  A simple stamped sentiment and a rounded top corner finish the design.

I'm also entering this into Virginia's View Challenge #22 (All About Colors).  I think the tree has just about every colour of the rainbow. :)  What a fantastic challenge and so happy Virginia's challenges are running again.

And entering again into AAA Card #66 Challenge - Watercolour.  I do love to watercolour and believe this is my fifth entry into this challenge.  Hope the AAA DT aren't tired of seeing my name pop up! :)

Inlaid Die-cut

Hi everyone.  Bought this beautiful die a couple of months ago from Scrapbook Warehouse in Vancouver.  LOVE how pretty and delicate it looks when watercoloured.

I used the inlaid die-cutting technique for this card.  It was simple to do.  I didn't add all the background pieces back, but instead, just added the oval outline, leaves and flowers.  The rest of the die-cut pieces were left out so there is a clear view to the background behind the die-cut.  Then I popped it up over top of the lattice design stenciled background.

Watercolour Wash

Hi everyone.  A few weeks ago I got together with some crafty friends and we tried all kinds of watercolour techniques and mediums.  This is one of the projects we did that day, and I finally got it made into a card.  :)

We did watercolour wash with Peerless Watercolors.  I don't know if you're familiar, but they come in several forms, including a small booklet.  They have small sheets (approx 6 1/2" x 2 1/2") of each of fourteen colours.  They are dry, but as soon as you touch them with a wet brush, you brush will be filled with gorgeous watercolour pigments.  They would be great for doing crafts when you are traveling, as you only have to bring along your brushes and the booklet.

Here's what they look like ...

I used two colours (Sky Blue and Dark Blue) for the background wash.  First, I heat embossed the image of two trees and falling snow in white.  Then taped my watercolour paper down to a clip board using painter's tape.  This keeps it from warping.  Used a sponge brush to add lots of water to the paper ... you should be able to see a sheen of wet.  Picked up the first colour with a wet brush and made large gestural strokes.  The second colour was added with a wet brush filling in some of the areas without colour along with overlapping a small amount of the first colour.  Then I tipped my clipboard, letting the colour and water run.  This created the design above.  Also sprinkled kosher salt over top and let it dry completely before brushing away the residue.  The salt pushes the colour away and created small starbursts.  Very cool!

To finish the card, I tore two pieces of white card stock for snow drifts, splattered diluted white acrylic paint over everything and let it dry before stamping my sentiment.

I used snippets for my torn snowdrifts, so I'm heading over for some fun at the Snippets Playground.  Also entering this into the AAA #66 - Watercolour challenge.  I think this is my fourth entry --- can you tell I love to play with watercolours?! :)

Hi everyone.  Today I'm sharing a card I made for a sweet friend to thank her for all her support.  I had a lot of fun colouring this and thinking of her the whole time. :) Thanks Barb!

My CAS Mix Up card has die-cuts, stamping, heat embossing, watercolouring and splattering, but is still a CAS (clean and simple) design.

I heat embossed the leaves in liquid platinum (love this colour) onto mixed media paper and then watercoloured using three colours of Zig Clean Color Real Brushes. I die-cut the leaves from matching dies.

I scribbled two of those same colours of Zigs onto my mat, spritzed with water and then splattered the background to create a soft backdrop for my leaves.  I'm happy with how it turned out.  A simple, small black banner heat embossed in liquid platinum finishes the card.

AAA Cards #66 - Watercolour

Watercolour Die-cuts

Hi everyone.  I have a confession to make ... I LOVE die-cuts.  I'm obsessed with them. :)  I'm sure you have noticed that I use them on the majority of my cards.  So when I saw the June Challenge at CASEplorations with Shelly Kurth's gorgeous card with the die-cut circle, I had to play along.

I started by making a Splash Watercoloured background.  Click HERE to see my video tutorial on this fun and easy technique.  By pouncing the watercolour paper into diluted puddles of ink, I got splashes of colour that give this background lots of visual texture.  Pink and brown look great together and I'm so happy how this turned out.

The poppies were die-cut and watercoloured using diluted distress inks and a water brush.  I arranged it so that a few of the flowers are outside the circle frame.  The card front is popped up over the card base for added dimension, as well as popping up a few of the flower heads.  A simple, small sentiment was stamped to finish it off.

I'm also entering this card into two more challenges:  AAA #66 - Watercolour; and Memory Box #13 - Watercolour (I used Row of Poppies die from MB).
