As I mentioned a couple of days ago when I posted my first two canvases HERE, I had a play day with Susan and Christine last Sunday and we experimented with acrylic paint techniques.
We first headed to two $1 stores in my area. We picked up some acrylic paints and canvases for not much money. The canvas above is 8" square and was $2.00. I used four colours of paint ($1.25 ea). Normally, I buy good quality art supplies, but these are just some fun techniques that work well with any type of paint. One video I saw even used wall paint. :) We lined our work table with large garbage bags before starting, which made clean up easy.
The one above is my favourite from the day. This technique is called Dirty Pour and we followed this video. We just diluted our paints with water, and followed the video about pouring the colours together and then giving a quick stir before adding to the canvas. Then the fun begins as you tilt your canvas and let the paint flow over the sides. I love the marbled look I got with this technique.
For the second canvas below, I smooshed it into the paint that overflowed from the canvas above and then dribbled on any leftover ink from my containers. Didn't waste any of the paint, smooshing two small canvases and then card stock, coated card stock and yupo papers, just to see what worked best. They all worked great.
You'll see that I was in love with this paint colour combo, so I used it again for the third canvas. This is a drip technique that we followed with this video. Easy and fun to do. All of the canvases done with turquoise, green and white are made with the $1 store acrylics (DecoArt).
My last canvas is another of the palette knife technique from this video. This is the second time I've tried this and I ended up with lots of texture this time. The colours are different. I used different shades of blue, white, and just a little sea green. This canvas was done with medium body Liquitex (Basics) acrylics. Medium body or heavy body paint is thick which helps to create the texture that you see on the canvas. Not in love with the results, but it's OK. :)
I used soft gloss gel, diluted with water, to seal the canvases (two coats leaving 24 hrs to dry in-between coats).
I hope you've enjoyed seeing my abstract canvases. They were so much fun to make!
Wow Loll these are gorgeous! They'd make fabulous presents!

I love your canvases Loll! The movement on the first three is so cool...did it end up looking like that (kinda swirled?) on cardstock and Yupo too? Love the colors too! Fun, fun!! :0)
ReplyDeleteLove, love that first canvas that looks just like a view of the world from space. Hugs Mrs A.
ReplyDeleteNot only does this look like fun, but it makes gorgeous canvases! Love that Dirty Pour especially!
ReplyDeleteBonnie - I'm thinking we have to get together and try this! ;)
DeleteI love them all Loll, but the Dirty pour and drip techniques were my favorite. Loved your color choices too. I need to make a trip to our dollar stores. You have me inspired my friend. Again...WOW! TFS

Wow! You find the neatest techniques, Loll! Not only are these beautiful they look SO fun to do! Love the different effects you achieved with paint. Thank you too for the links. Already watched and can't wait to give it a try. Your attempts are so successful!
ReplyDeleteYou got an audible gasping WOW on this one my friend!!! So unbelievable. What gorgeous paintings in their own right - but also SUPER cool MM bases for projects. Great - now I have to start these too....you are the ultimate ENABLER!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Dirty Pour ones and want to try that technique again. It was so much fun doing the canvases with you. Can't wait to come back and pick mine up and seal them. The blue, green, and white is such a lovely fresh colour combination.
ReplyDeleteSuch gorgeousness! The blues, greens & white made me think of the seas as viewed from the satellite - and I love that you've done this technique on so many different mediums. It looks great on all of them. Also tfs the video links, as I will be watching. It's easy to see what fun you had, and even your 'dribbles' turned out so beautifully. You will enjoy seeing these projects displayed in your home/or studio! TFS & Hugs
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! Those first two look like beautiful satellite photos taken at high altitude of earth, water, and clouds. Stunning! What a cool technique! What cool paintings!! The third one reminds me of marshes in northern Minnesota for some reason, and both your painting and the marshes have a lovely, calm effect. And those blues and whites, with the smidgen of sea green is so full of texture, depth, and tons of interest! I've enjoyed them all very much!!! WOW!! Bev
ReplyDeleteLOLL, these are amazing. After watching the video's I can imagine the mess I would make, I am a messy painter and it would be everywhere, no wonder you used garbage bags. The result is beautiful...I did watch the 'cell' one using the blow torch, amazing too. thanks for the links.xx ♥[aNNie]
ReplyDeleteWOW! These are amazing Loll! The green and blue ones remind me of aerial views of the sea with the foam of the waves and the blues and greens of the water! Just stunning! Thanks for the links to the tuts! Luv n’ Hugs. Hazel xx

Loll, I love the dirty pour, I'm with everyone so much like a satellite image.
ReplyDeleteWe have to do this again :) I might have to pick mine up before the next get together to seal and perhaps play some more. I'm thinking mixed media and matt gel to stick stuff down.
Love your colours on the top three canvases Loll, and great work on them all. It must have been a fun day :-)

Absolutely amazing and how fun for you ladies to play together again!! My favorite one is the second one which makes me think of looking down on the beach from a bluff. Each one gets my imagination going, Lolly! Hugs, Dolly

ReplyDeleteLove the Dirty Pour canvas and the colors you chose. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteOh Loll, such beauty with fun techniques. And sharing with friends is even better. I think, too, that the first one is from outer space and the second a serene, soothing day at the beach (a favorite place for me). You got me looking at videos of these techniques...probably will have to try it when the weather gets warmer and can use the garage!!! Thanks again for all your inspiration(s). XX Sarah
ReplyDeleteWow, these look amazing, Loll! I expect you had lots of fun. They are all lovely but I especially like the first one, the way the colours swirl together, such a pretty effect.
ReplyDeleteOh these are beautiful Loll. I just love the swirls.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to still experiment and look for new techniques. Your images look like you've been working with this technique for a long time :-) Awesome. Especially the second picture reminds me of the sea. Waves that continue to flow forward, pouring out and looking for new horizons. Great experience Thanks Loll.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
