Hi everyone. Today I'm sharing an experiment. I wanted to see if I could watercolour with Distress Oxide Inks. I used a brush to add clear water randomly over the center of my watercolour panel. Then I just picked up some distress ink and randomly tapped it into the wet paper. I washed out my brush and added a second, and then third colour randomly over the background. I loved the artsy look and decided to add this sentiment to go with. Diluted black acrylic paint was splattered over top to finish.
I'm happy with the way it turned out, but was hoping it would have a more translucent look. Next time I will stick with using Distress inks or watercolour paints.
Stamps: follow your art (Stampendous)
Paper: Hot Press Watercolour paper (Arches 140 lb.)
Ink: Distress Oxides: Fossilized Amber, Spiced Marmalade, Peacock Feathers (Tim Holtz); Versamark; Black acrylic paint (Liquitex)
Accessories & Tools: water mister, black embossing powder, heat tool, paint brush for splattering
There seems to be no end to the effects which can be achieved with ink pads and water although the DOX do tend to be rather more opaque than the normal Distress pads. It is great fun to experiment and mix it up a bit as well just to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteYour background is lovely, Loll, your choice of colours is great and perfect for the sentiment. I really like the splatters and photo background too. I've tried making backgrounds with distress oxides and not been happy with the results so far.
ReplyDeleteLovely experiment Loll. Your background is beautiful and very artsy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for experimenting this technique for us x So artsy and the background and sentient are perfect together. Great colours and great card x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous background you've created Loll and thank you for sharing your technique with us....lovely card

i really like how this turned out, Loll - think the opaque background is really pretty - great card!
ReplyDeleteI love the background - a very successful experiment!
ReplyDeleteI do watercolour with my DOX inks and love the effect, but you are right, Loll not the same effect as your Distress inks or watercolour paints. TFS you results and I love how you added the splatters and the the perfect sentiment. Hugs..
ReplyDeleteInteresting experiment, Loll! As much as I like your card, I think I agree with your conclusion that it's a better technique for regular Distress inks or watercolour paints. Great splatters and sentiment!
ReplyDeleteI love that you are so in touch with your hidden scientist, Lolly, and that you enjoy experimenting with colors and mediums and sharing the results with us! It is interesting how the chalky inks kept their chalkiness when you watercolored with them. Even though it's not what you had anticipated, it's still a beautiful work of art!! Hugs, Dolly
ReplyDeleteA very soft look to your background Lol, and a worthwhile 'experiment', with a great result. Love the drama of the big bold sentiment over it.

Experimenting is so fun! This looks wonderful! You are so fun to follow...I never know what you will try next and it's so fun to see the results of what you try. Thanks for always sharing! And inspiring! :)
ReplyDeleteThis really shows the difference between the Distress ink and DOX! The strong sentiment is perfect with the less transparent background!
ReplyDeleteIt may not be what you thought you would get but I wouldn't change a thing. I really like the softness of it and the splatters and sentiment are perfect.
ReplyDeleteI think this turned out really cool and how perfect is your sentiment to go with it?! I also tried painting with my DOX's but mine turned out quite muddy...probably not the right combination of colors! Yours look great together though and I love the black splatters over it too! :0)
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Loll. I tried watercoloring some flowers with DOX and they didn't turn out well at all. Into the recycle bin they went and I started all over with regular Distress Inks. They look good the way you did them but I love them best when layered for backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely don't run short of fresh ideas and the results are always fabulous, Loll! Love this idea as well as the rich colors achieved by the Oxides. Beautiful blending with water too and your sentiment is perfect for this.
ReplyDeleteAdore the background and the word stamp is perfect for it! Love it!
ReplyDeleteVery cool and artsy, Loll ... it would be right at home in a gallery! Hugs, Anita :)
ReplyDeleteWOW, LOLL !!! It looks like I'm floating among the colorful clouds! Amazing effect. I love that it is not translucent, as in most watercolor paints. And yet, this delicate splatter, which looks like birds nest floating in these clouds. Great card and amazing technique.
