Zooming with Friends

Hi everyone.  A couple of weeks ago, a group of us got together on Zoom to have a crafting session.  We followed Kathy Racoosin's video Print Making with Die-cuts.

The group of us are all posting our cards today.  Would love for you to check out the links to the other's blogs and leave them a comment as well.

I believe you get the best results from this technique using watercolour paper (Cold or Hot Press).  I used Arches 140 lb. Cold Press for both cards

For the card above I used a Penny Black die-cut, along with watercolouring with distress inks (rather than markers like Kathy used in her video).  Added a frame and stamped sentiment to match the colour of the leaves.  Happy how it turned out.

Second card ...
This time I used a fern die from AliExpress.  I found when using die-cuts with lots of openings, it's best to just add the prints from the die-cuts.  If I watercoloured the fern on top of my main panel, because of all the openings, I would end up with blobs of colour that distract from the design.  Ask me how I know this. :)  I cut my panel down and added the black sentiment border.  I'm really happy how this turned out as well.

I hope you'll give this technique a try.  It's fun and easy to do.  With it being more free flowing it always turns out to be a beautiful and arsty card.

  1. Two very pretty cards Loll, not used that technique before.
What a great idea to do a Zoom craft get together, would never have thought to do something like that. It would be a great idea for a get together across the miles, certainly saves on air fares and travelling time!! :)

  3. I love the distinct faded background images you achieved with your dies, Lolly! Your flower looks 3D with the placement of your design so the background petals look like they are a part of the flower and I really love the depth you got with the fern. It's almost like a double stamp off. This technique is so much fun and it makes me want to go through all my dies and turn them into stamps!!

Thank you for your message. It's been a rough couple of weeks. Today it's hotter and a bit smoky again, but it was a lovely two days while it lasted. The important thing is they are slowly making progress every day. I hope you're keeping well! Love, Dolly

  5. Hi Loll,
I have tried this and find I have too much color when trying to color my die cut on top of another piece of watercolor paper. HOWEVER, it works well for me to just color my die cut and lightly spritz it and use that as a stamp for the lighter background, using the actual colored die cut as my pop up. Only way I could make it work and believe me I tried numerous times to get the original way to work - LOL!
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement and samples!!!!
    Paper Hugs,

  13. I love the look of this technique and definitely one to try Loll, and your flowers and fern both look so pretty with the prints from then in the background and the finishing with the rectangular aperture on the first, and then the raised up mat edged with the white on black sentiment which really stands out, on the second. Great for you all to get together for a Zoom crafting session. x

  19. This card is so happy, Loll. I love vibrant colors. Adding a reflection of the flowers in the background makes them look like a natural part of the bouquet, and the beautiful sentiment wonderfully completes the card. In the second tab, I love how you added depth to this leaf with color gradation. Thanks for your valuable advice, Loll. WOW!

  22. How fun to have a zoom crafting session and have a mini blog-hop, Loll!
Both cards are so pretty! I love the soft prints in the background as much as the colored die-cuts. Last time I tried, I used SU markers. I'll try this technique with Distress Ink next time. It looks like transfer of colors is better with DI. Thank you for your tips!
