Hi everyone. Two cards for you today using two of the Season of Hope release at Penny Black. Both images are slapstick/cling stamps, Cozy Cabin (40-760) and Season's Tweetings (40-761).
I started by sponging the sky (upper third of the card front), gradually getting lighter and lighter.
Inked up the stamp, spritzed lightly with water and stamped onto my mixed media card front. Moved the ink around with a waterbrush and added some ink as needed. Added some pencil work outlining the cabin and adding the ground to anchor the image. Added some clear wink of stella to add shimmer to the snowy roof and snowhill. Finished by splattering lots of white acrylic paint and then adding the sentiment Christmas Moments (30-731), which is stamped in black and heat embossed in clear so it stands out better against the blue sky..

For my second card, I used Season's Tweetings (40-761). I had some trouble with this image. Not sure why, it happens to me once in a while where I can't seem to get a good watercoloured image. After several tries, I felt I needed help and lo' and behold, there was an on-line course starting up by Heather Telford (cards.HeatherTelford.com). Heather is an amazingly talented watercolourist. I signed up and watched her video on how to watercolour the slapstick/cling images from Penny Black. I found it immensley helpful.
This image was place in my Misti and inked up with distress inks, spritzed with a little water and stamped. I have done this technique a lot of time, but the biggest thing I learned from Heather was to add a very light inking to get more of a watercoloured look. I know I need a lot of practice, but I'm happy with my first attempt using Heather's watercolouring tips.

Two lovely cards, Loll. My favourite is the first one, I love the wintery scene you've created. xx
ReplyDeleteTwo wonderful cards, Loll! I really love the cabin in the woods and can imagine how pretty the shimmery snow looks! The bird on the branch is so pretty done in the watercolor style! I think you did a wonderful job! I'm a big fan of Heather Telford, also.
ReplyDeleteBoth cards turned out great, Loll! I have the stamp with the bird and if you had a hard time I know I'll have a mess. But thank you for the info on Heather T. I've had the notification sitting here debating whether to take it or not. Her videos are excellent so thanks again for pushing me over the edge to do it!
ReplyDeleteOh my! Great cards, but now I gotta put my socks back on because that bird just blew them off! I adore that bird card...
ReplyDeleteTwo great cards, Loll. I love the bird one and I think you did a great job on it. You're tempting me to sign up for the course! The cozy cabin looks like a perfect winter retreat!
ReplyDeleteThis sweet cottage looks so warm and cozy, Lolly! I'll bet there's hot chocolate or hot mulled wine ready and waiting! I love the sweet bird in the holly! I've been watching the videos in Heather's class and she has lots of great tips. Glad to see you're enjoying it too.
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous cards Loll, both what I love..a snowy scene and anything with birds, and both watercoloured beautifully. The sky in that wonderful blue fading out to nothing is just wonderful, and love the sweet little cabin with the pretty green fir trees to frame it, and some lovely wisps of smoke coming out of the chimney...also the soft blue sky background looks great. Glad you found Heather's course gave you some good tips. She is absolutely the best all round watercolour artist I know, although there is someone here who is doing brilliantly too. x
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are beautiful Loll, so funny I've been eyeing Heather's online class :)
ReplyDeleteI do really like how you have done the sky on your first card and you have achieved a really lovely watercolour effect with your stamp on your second card. Doesn't look like you need more practice to me xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cards! Sorry you had a bit of trouble with the first one, but your class worked because the card is wonderful. I kind of wish I was there snug as a bug away from all the strife in our world. :) Your second card is gorgeous, too. I think you are very talented!
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely Lolly!
ReplyDeleteConfess to the second one slightly edging it - cos I love the cute birdie!x
Oh, such beautiful cards, Loll!! Lovely scenery on your first card and second card is so sweet with the bird!
ReplyDeleteCozy cabin gives you warm fuzzies when you see it and Penny Black always has the best sentiments. You did a beautiful job water coloring the bird. I'll check out Heather's blog.
ReplyDeleteLove your log cabin watercolored Winter scene and beautiful sentiment, Lolly. The cabin reminds me of our log home, including the smoke from our wood stove and the fir trees:-) Thank you sharing, my friend. Love and Hugs...Nancy
ReplyDeleteWhoops, I forgot to comment on your 2nd Gorgeous bird on the Winter berry branch. I think I know my issue of watercoloring this style of PB staamps...too much water. TFS your tip and I will be checking out Heather's link. I loved your watercolored bird...turned out beautifully and the dark and light shading of your leaves and berries. Wow! Love and Hugs..Nancy
ReplyDeleteThese are both so beautiful I really couldn't pick a favorite. I love the trees on your first card, and the cozy cabin/woodsy scene speaks to my heart. I have a similar card waiting to be photographed right now. Your second card has the sweet bird and graceful holly branch so beautifully watercolored. I do have a weakness for bird stamps. Love that pretty "greetings", too.
ReplyDeleteHi Loll,
ReplyDeleteBoth cards are beautiful and I especially like the bird and I'm thrilled you found the frosty foliage lesson helpful. Yay!

Both cards are fabulous, Loll! You did a wonderful job of creating a watercolor look. I especially love the I enjoy "watching" Heather's video. She is so good that she makes what she does look so easy.
ReplyDeleteThe pencil work for the cabin definitely gave more definition to it. The snowy sky is gorgeous!
And I LOve the second card. The close-up shows all the details and the various colors. The pretty bird is the icing on the cake!
Hideko xx
Absolutely beautiful watercoloring on both cards, Loll! I'm partial to the bird and dreamy feel to this card, but I do love them both! Thank you so much for the link to Heather's tutorial...I could use some watercoloring tips :) xx
