Hi everyone.
First, I want to thank everyone for the well wishes and lovely cards I received. I am thankful to have so many people pulling for me through my heart surgery and recovery. I'm doing OK ... hubby is taking great care of me. :)
This month our Group of Seven Cardmakers tried Dry Embossed Gilding Flakes following a video from Technique Junkies, Embossed Gilding Flakes and led by Susan.
Please check out the details for the technique and link to video on the blog ...
I actually did this technique in late-February. This is such a fun technique (as long as the gilding flakes don't get away from me!). I love the shimmer and shine of gilding flakes ... they always make an elegant card.
I used Warm Sunshine (Cosmic Shimmer) gilding flakes to make two small panels. For the first panel, I die-cut the Moonlight Butterfly (Memory Box). I then dry embossed my butterfly with Musical Flourish embossing folder (Cuttlebug). I have mini archival inks in several colours, this time using Sepia to lightly swipe (direct from ink pad to gilding flakes panel) over top, catching the highlighted design. This has to be done carefully so that you don't get a lot of ink on the background. I did three coats before being happy with the contrast.
To finish the card, I smooshed Ripe Persimmon and Gathered Twigs Distress Inks using a piece of acetate. Adding the inks and spritz of water onto the acetate allows me to lightly dab onto my card front with a little bit of control. I stamped the sentiment (Happy Messages - Stampendous) in the same Sepia archival ink as well as using that ink on the antennae.
Close-up ...
The second panel is done with the same gilding flakes (Warm Sunshine) and embossed with Courrier (Carabella Studio) embossing folder. This time, Vermillion (dark red) archival ink was lightly swiped to pick up the highlighted, embossed design. I used the panel for the background, adding a die-cut branch (sponged with Gathered Twigs DI) and punched flowers (coloured with more of the Vermillion Archival ink).
In all, I found this to be a simple technique that gave beautiful results. The video used black ink and that would have worked on both panels, but I wanted subtler colours and I'm happy with the results.
If you have gilding flakes in your stash, I hope you'll try out this technique and share your card in the linky on the Group of Seven blog.

ReplyDeleteTwo perfect CAS cards using this technique! Love the Sepia and Vermillion inks for rubbing over the raised areas - much more subtle than the black in the video!
ReplyDeleteThis was a fun technique and a great way to use supplies that have been sitting in the cupboard for a while :)
ReplyDeleteyour butterfly is gorgeous and love the script background ♥
I love your results, Lolly, and how you cut your butterfly for one and used a text background with the dark red swiping for the second! The smooching and the die-cut branch added wonderful interest to the shiny gilding! I wish you continued healing and look forward to when you can say you're doing "great!" Love, Dolly
ReplyDeleteTwo beautiful cards created using this technique Loll - hadn't thought of die cutting something small - your butterfly came out beautifully in the golden colors! Your background is so pretty using the red ink and layering the pretty stems over it as well! I'm going to play some more with this technique! So happy you are on the road to recovery! Julia xx
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us another technique and the cards are just gorgeous! Love the simplicity of the butterfly as well as the gorgeous red and gold of the second card. How fun is this!
ReplyDeleteStunning...now I am going to have to buy some flakes...
ReplyDeleteTwo gorgeous dry embossed gilded flakes cards, Lolly. Love your beautiful shiny textured gilded butterfly and smooshed background on your 1st card and your creative textured dry embossed gilded flakes background for your sweet die cut flowers on your 2nd card:-) I can't wait to try the technique. I was cleaning up my room a few days ago and so I know exactly where I have my gold gilded flakes:-) How is that for timing?!?
ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear you are continuing to improve from your surgery and loving your cards by your many friends, who have been so concerned and treasure our friendships with you, dear sweet Lolly:-) Love and soft Hugs...Nancy

Firstly, I am so pleased to hear that things are moving in the right direction on the health front and that your hubby is giving you lots of TLC. Now on to your beautiful gilding flake and embossing folder creations Loll, they are both gorgeous..the butterfly works brilliantly against the smooshed acetate background and love the colours, and then the wonderful script enhanced with the dark red ink, and the blossoms on the bough are just perfect over the top on the second. x
ReplyDeleteThese are both SO beautiful Loll, and I am definitely going to have to try this technique out! Your butterfly on your first card may be small, but he sure packs a punch using the gilding flakes and embossing folder...soooo pretty! Love the simple smooshing on your background too! And your 2nd card is just as lovely! So glad to hear you're doing ok and that hubby is taking good care of you! Healing takes longer as we age, so just take it easy and let time do its thing...you'll get there!! Hugs. :0)
ReplyDeleteBoth of your cards are wonderful, Loll. That darling little embossed butterfly shines against the soft acetate smooshing. I'm loving those dark blooms on the script panel. No gilding flakes here but I'm intrigued with the technique.
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd thought to use another color of archival ink on mine, Lolly! I like this much better than with the black. Your butterfly is stunning and the background so perfect for him to perch on! I love the way the flowers blend so beautifully with the second background! This was a fun technique!
ReplyDeleteThese cards are amazing, thank you for sharing the technique. I am so pleased to hear that you are making good progress after your surgery xx

ReplyDeleteBoth cards are stunning, Loll! The butterfly and the rectangle panel made using this technique look gorgeous and elegant! Love the beautiful shine and the mix of colors. I also love the subtle finish with the Sepia and Vermillion inks.

I am super happy to hear you are doing well after your heart surgery Loll and that hubby is taking good care of you! I love the idea of embossing over top of the gilding flakes and then swiping with ink! It is so pretty and I love the texture. Your butterfly card is gorgeous, love the smooshed background. Your second card is equally gorgeous, love the red ink you used on this one. The flowers and branch are so pretty on top! I do love the subtler colors as well as the black inks. they both have their place I think. Hugs, Brenda
ReplyDeleteThe gilded cardboard looks really beautiful. The embossing made it look really cute. I also love that you added color to the embossing. It was an excellent idea.
