Hi everyone. This month at Group of Seven we are playing with this fun technique that combines two techniques (heat embossing / stenciling) to create unique cards.

Here's what I learned when I experimented with this technique ...
- The best backgrounds for this technique are words, script, etc. Other small design backgrounds work well too.
- White embossing of the background design is beautiful and soft. For a stronger contrast, use coloured embossing powder.
- Intricate background designs are not suited for coloured embossing as the stenciling over top doesn't stand out.
For the above card I started with the Crackle Background Stamp (Simon Says Stamp), stamped in Versamark and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. Placed the Tumbling Leaves Stencil (Simon Says Stamp) over top and using small blending brushes, sponged randomly with three colours of Distress Inks: Peacock Feathers, Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade. Once I was finished, I lightly swiped over the stenciling with a dry paper towel to remove any excess ink that was sitting on top of the heat embossing (resist). A large die-cut hello sentiment is cut three times from black card stock, glued together to create a thick embellishment, and then coated in crystal glaze.

I wanted to try out a few more pairing of heat embossed backgrounds and stenciling so here's what happened ...
The above card uses Dream Background from Unity, stamped and heat embossed in clear, before sponging over the Butterfly stencil (Visible Image) with Distress inks Salty Ocean and Wilted Violet.
Sending the above card to Triple B (Birds, Blooms & Butterflies) October Challenge. I didn't use the optional mood board this time.
... and a Christmas card ...
This time I used the En Francais stamp from Stampin' Up! for the background, inking with White Pigment ink and heat embossing with white.
I placed a stencil of a poinsettia (cut from my Silhouette) over top and sponged on colour (Distress Inks: Mowed Lawn, Rustic Wilderness, Candied Apple). To finish, a sentiment (Snowglobe Sentiments - retired - My Favorite Things) was stamped in more of the Mowed Lawn ink.

Fabulous trio, Loll - love what you did with this technique!! The crackle looks amazing with the stenciled leaves and the script with the poinsettia! But I have to pick the butterfly with the dream as my fave - just love how it seems to drip down the card. Thanks for the inspiration!!

three absolutely stunning cards Loll, the butterfly is beautiful with the bold script background. This was a great technique and for one will be doing a few more of these to add to my Christmas stash :)
Beautiful examples for this technique Loll! The crackle and text embossed backgrounds show through your different stencilings wonderfully! Love the mix of colors you used on the first one with that bold hello sentiment! All three are really beautiful! While you suggested that the smaller or script type embossing works best, you sure showed us the other can work too! I just ADORE that poinsettia card, Loll, really gorgeous!

I love all of these but my favorite is the leaves. The colors are so pretty and the crackle is very cool. Maybe if I hadn't insisted on making a Christmas card it would have been better but I still couldn't seem to match things. We learn something from each other and each time we do these techniques.

Wonderful cards. You are right about that technique, quite straightforward but really effective. I imagine the trick is using the right background stamp with the right stencil. I will have to have a think about what I have in my stash that might work xx

These all turned out great, Loll. I'm off to get more details on the technique. I have plenty of background stamps but few stencils with large open areas.
All 3 of these are absolutely BEAUTIFUL Loll!! Your first one is so bright and vibrant with the subtle embossing and the bold sentiment...love it! The butterfly is absolutely GORGEOUS too...I just love the colors!! And the Poinsettia with one of my all time favorite background stamps is FABULOUS! You really outdid yourself with all 3 of these cards my friend...so, SO pretty!! Hugs. :0)

I'm very late at commenting on the Gof7 cards! But better late than never! I love all your cards, Loll! You did such a great job picking background stamps that would work well with the various stencils. I especially love the butterfly one - gorgeous colours, perfect with the big sentiment background stamp.

The first card looks like it's engulfed in flames, the color selection is stunning. I also love the butterfly, and the stamp I chose fits it perfectly. The third card with this delicate script is truly beautiful.
