Hi everyone. This month the Group of Seven are highlighting another Design Element - Torn Edges. There are so many ways you can add a torn edge to your card designs.
Please check out the details for the technique and link to videos on the blog, as well as many wonderful inspiration cards from members of the Group.
The card above uses Poppies Background from Simon Says Stamp. I LOVE the large flowers that are so much fun to watercolour. I stamped the image in black ink and heat embossed with clear before watercolouring with my favourite colour combo of distress inks: Saltwater Taffy and Abandoned Coral. This card makes me so happy. :)
The vellum banner has a torn edge, which adds something special to the design, as well as not covering up the background. It's a win/win. :)

The next card shows how using a torn edge for masking can create added dimension, while keeping the card one layer.
A torn mask was added to the top and bottom of the card and then sponged over top with distress inks: Salvaged Patina, then a small border of Mowed Lawn near the edges, and then more Salvaged Patina on top, leaving the center area without sponging. This created varying colours for my background. The masks were removed.
The Slimline Gentle Leaves stencil (The Crafter's Workshop) was placed over the sponged area. More distress inks (Mowed Lawn, Rustic Wilderness) were sponged over the stencil using detail sponges bought from AliExpress. They were really inexpensive but they are so great at getting into small areas. :) A sentiment was stamped in more Rustic Wilderness ink to finish the card.

Sending the above card to Stencil Fun December Challenge.... and one more ...
I used mixed media paper to stencil (Winter Snowflake Lace - retired) using Salvaged Patina distress ink. The stenciled panel was torn on an angle at about half way down the card front, then the ends were cut off a bit to create open space when I added the two pieces to the top and bottom of my card base.
Snowy (Penny Black) is stamped, heat embossed and watercoloured using Weathered Wood and Mowed Lawn distress inks. I used a tiny bit of red chalk for his rosy cheeks before die-cutting using the matching die (Frosty's snow - Penny Black). Sentiment (Christmas Sentiments - Penny Black) is stamped in black ink to finish the card.

Three wonderful ways to use a torn edge Loll - My favorite is the torn vellum over your gorgeously colored poppies! Julia xx
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with this poppy panel, Loll! So pretty in your favorite colors - I'm so glad the vellum allows them to shine through this really amazing torn-edged sentiment strip!
ReplyDeleteAnd there's my fave snow dude again - am I the ONLY one that doesn't have him?? I sure wish we could convince PB to rerelease him in a clear stamp set!

I Love all Three of your beautiful torn edged cards, Lolly...But the Poppies were my favorite. I need to add the bg stamp to my collection...You are right, the poppies are so beautiful watercolored. Adding the sentiment on a torn edge piece of vellum made your card Magical, my friend. I love how you created 3 cards with 3 different torn edge techniques too. TFS and always inspiring all your many friends and followers:-)

WOW! Three amazing cards. I love, love, love the poppy card. Gorgeous large flowers, beautifully coloured, and the torn vellum looks perfect. The stencilled leaves look fab, great way of using the torn edges. And last but not least, Snowy looks so cute! Again, great use of the torn edges. Lovely photo of Jessie too, she's adorable. Wishing you and your family a very Happy New Year xx

Terrific uses of your torn edges, each card is as special as the next! I must use this technique more -- thanks for bringing it back into our sphere
ReplyDeleteI just love the poppy card, that background stamp is fantastic. The torn vellum sentiment adds without distraction, fab. Your two other designs look equally fab and who doesn't love Snowy?! Hope you have a great Christmas with family. :)

All 3 of your cards are beautiful Loll, but I'm especially in LOVE with your 1st card...it's FABULOUS!! I love the image and soft colors and the torn vellum sentiment strip is the perfect addition!! And of course Snowy always makes me smile...such a cutie! Such an easy way to add interest to a card by tearing edges, but I so often forget to do it...thanks for the reminder! And Jessie's Christmas photo is beautiful...give her a hug for me! :0)
ReplyDeleteOh those poppies are fabulous! Three wonderful cards, Loll and a terrific photo of your Jessie!
ReplyDeletePoppies make me happy too, Loll, and you did a beautiful job of coloring them. Tearing the vellum for a sentiment strip gives a more artsy feel to your card. I love the way you used it as a mask. I'd better try that right now so I remember it.
ReplyDeleteLoll, your poppies are breathtaking! I also love the blend of Saltwater Taffy and Abandoned Coral. Subtle and perfect. The vellum is always a good way to add a special touch and a sentiment without too much cover up. Now, your second card is very special to me as it is in my collection right now. Such a beautiful thing and a perfect example of how less is more. Gentle and soothing. Of course, I love Snowy, too. There's something so endearing about him. Such a delicate and lovely snowflake background. I like how the edges fade away. Finally, a most beautiful pic of your beloved Jessie. Look at the curls and fluff! She's such a pretty girl. Thank you for sharing all this beauty today, and happy new year!
ReplyDeleteJust love the three ways you used the torn edges, Loll - I think my fave is the leafy one. Awww - sweet Jessie all fluffed up! Hope you had a Merry Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteYou are making me wonder why I never use torn paper on my cards. These are all fantastic. Thanks so much for the inspiration and for the photo of Jessie. Doesn't she look lovely and fluffy after her spa day xx
ReplyDeleteThree wonderful examples of torn edge techniques! I love the torn vellum for the sentiment over the first one - the soft pink flowers are beautiful. The combination of masking and stencilling on the second one makes for a perfect CAS card with a lot of interest. Love your idea of splitting the snowflake stencilled panel in two - it adds so much to the card. I'm glad we revisited torn edge techniques as I tend to forget about them.
ReplyDeleteThree stunning cards Loll but I have been swooning over the beautiful blending of colour on that first card. Truly breathtaking. I do love the adding of torn vellum. Makes a big difference and a little creative. Hope you have a happy New Year and look forward to seeing so much more of your creativeness in the New Year.
ReplyDeletePS A beautiful photo of Jessie. So adorable and so loving!
What fabulous cards Loll, and the torn edges as an element on each card really makes an impact. The beautifully watercoloured poppies are enhanced by the torn vellum for the sentiment which leaves them clearly visible, and then the wonderful dimension to the pretty stencilled leaves with the blue and green blended inky background, and with added interest with the masked torn edges, and lastly sweet little Snowy, one of my PB favourites with the super stencilled snowflake background, and he bridges the gap between the two edges perfectly. x
ReplyDeleteSorry, I forgot to say what a lovely photo of Jessie looking beautiful after her pampering session..so cute! x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Loll!
ReplyDeleteHave missed so much the last few weeks - M-I-L been very unwell so am hoping that things calm down a bit here.
Lovely pic of the cute Jessie too.
Happy New Year to you my friend. x
All three are wonderful examples of the torn paper. The vellum is a great choice to add the greeting and not lose any of the beautiful watercoloring on the poppies. That is a stunning card. The branch is so pretty stenciled over your background between the torn edges. Adding the torn paper with the design already there is a terrific idea for the snowy card.
ReplyDeleteThree beautiful ways to show the versatility of torn edges, Lolly! Love those pink flowers, the irregular edge of the stenciled background for this beautiful branch and the torn edges highlighting Snowy! Jessie looks so fluffy and sweet! Happy New Year, my dear friend.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful inspiration on this gorgeous trio of cards Loll.
ReplyDeleteHilary Jane told me about this challenge, so I came over to play!
Happy New Year to you xxx
Such wonderful and unique examples of this technique!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful trio showcasing different ways to incorporate torn edge. My favourite is the first poppy background one.
ReplyDeleteWonderful... a lovely set of cards Loll with this cool technique... I do love the floral with the vellum - that's a fab stamp.. hugs Robyn
